The thesis statement serves as one of the most unifying aspects of a paper. Not only does it introduce your topic to the reader, it holds the various parts together, summarizes your main arguments and suggest a direction for the development of your ideas.
Weak Thesis Statements
A weak thesis statement doesn’t necessarily mean a bad paper. However, it does get your work off to a bad start. The worst ones are those “the paper will show…” variety, which tells the reader what should be obvious: that your paper will show your claim is valid.
How To Write A Proper Thesis Statement
- Explain the main idea of your paper in 25 words or less. Start with however many words you need to communicate your point, then refining it to the desired number. Use an English writing software to help out when substituting words and phrases.
- Write down the primary question that your paper needs to answer. The goal is to find a way to provide a complete response, all while focusing on as small an area of investigation as possible.
- Look for “code words,” meaning terms that may require further explanation in your thesis statement. Once you identify them, work to find clearer alternatives.
