Looking for ways to get the writing juices flowing? Try one of these techniques the next time you find yourself staring blankly at the computer screen while beginning an essay or composing an email.
Listing Facts. When you know the topic you’re writing about but can’t find a way to begin putting them together, try listing the items you know about it one by one. Afterwards, go through the list and pick out items that you can use in your beginning paragraph. When you find yourself stuck later on, you can even refer to the same list to bring some ideas your way.
Write Without Facts. If you have an opinion about the subject, try writing directly from it without referring to your research. Just put words to paper and draw whatever you can from memory. Write it as best you can. For parts that require factual information, just mark them as XX or something similar, with every intent of returning to them later on.
Make sure to treat this as the first draft, though, instead of the finished piece. The last thing you want is to pull out a nice-looking essay without any sensible facts or corroborating arguments to support it.
Write From Templates. Fire up your English writing software and take advantage of its template features. Most of these types of applications come with hundreds, if not thousands, of pre-made templates and writing samples. You can almost always find one to use as a basis for your own work’s structure.
