How To Find Your Writing Style

Have you ever tried to define your writing style?  More often than not, it’s a long arduous road from being an anonymous wordsmith to having a recognizable signature.  It doesn’t have to be that way.  If you consciously work on discovering your style instead of just hoping to stumble onto it, you should be able to set yourself apart faster.

What types of pieces do you like to write? Do you enjoy tearjerker human interests stories?  Are you more inclined to write about personalities?  Do you find the confines of technical materials more comforting?

How long are the materials that you find most compelling to write?  Do you like short, in-and-out pieces?  Do you enjoy diving into ideas at great length, scouring their every nook and cranny?

What literary devices do you enjoy most?  Are you most comfortable lacing your writing with humor?  Or do you like things deep and heavy, like an excursion into the soul?  Maybe you prefer just doling out the facts clearly and succinctly with the help of a good writing software?

Who do you like writing for?  Only novice writers ever believe they’re writing for everyone.  Most of us actually write for a very specific audience.  Now, who do you actually enjoy producing pieces for?  Identify your audience and you should gain some clues about how to best reach out to them.
